Supporting educators lies at the core of our mission.

We have facilitated several professional development workshops, with a goal to inspire our teachers to engage students in field-based data collection and analysis that contributes to a larger authentic scientific study.

Island Watershed

Citizen Science

A Statewide Online Course for Teachers

 

Over four virtual sessions and one field trip, Hawai'i educators from grades 4-10 learned to engage students in field-based data collection and analysis by facilitating field trip(s) for students to engage them in meaningful outdoor watershed Citizen Science & stewardship. Further, participants in this course were connected with community experts and scientists.

 

Each participant received an iPad, a Citizen Science Classroom Kit, NGSS Aligned Online Resources, and ongoing support. Educators also earned a Teacher Stipend for Full Participation in the Online Course, Classroom Implementation, Field Trip(s), & Attendance at a Culminating Virtual Event.

Citizen Science

A Field-Based Teacher Workshop

 

In this field-based workshop, Hawai'i educators from grades 4-7 spent three days in the field, visiting 

Waikamoi Forest Preserve, Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge, Waiheʻe Ridge Trail, Kealia Ponds National Wildlife Refuge, and Kānaha Ponds State Wildlife Sanctuary. Then, educators applied field-research by participating in a classroom WET Lab.

Each participant gained access to a Mobile Citizen Science Technology Lab, and received a Citizen Science Classroom Kit, Standards-based resources, and ongoing support. Educators also earned a

Teacher Stipend for Full Participation.
